Oil spill in the Red Sea: US military warns of environmental disaster, prison terms imposed in trial over terrorist attack in southern France

Following the missile attack by Yemen’s Houthi militia on a cargo ship, the US military has warned of an environmental disaster in the Red Sea. The attacks created an oil slick almost 30 kilometers long, the US regional command Centcom said on Saturday. The ship was at anchor and slowly filling with water. The “Rubymar” was carrying about 41,000 tons of fertilizer, which could end up in the Red Sea and worsen the environmental disaster.

Last Sunday, the Houthis said they had attacked and severely damaged a cargo ship with missiles in the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The UKMTO, part of the British Navy, reported the attack and said the crew had been brought to safety. The Djibouti Port Authority subsequently reported that the crew of the Belize-flagged “Rubymar” had arrived safely in Djibouti.

The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, Ahmed bin Mubarak, on Saturday called on other countries and organizations to take part in environmental protection measures if the ship sank. (cst/sda/dpa)
