It took fifty years before Beat Jans (59) returned to the state government. At the beginning of this year, Jans replaced Minister of Health Alain Berset (51). If a Basel resident had been in the Federal Council and since the Basel Carnival had just ended, he would have allowed himself to do so, Jans said. But he knows: “The ‘three beautiful days’ are for us, the SP, the party conferences.”

The air police stopped Berset

With his Schnitzelbank, Jans alludes to Berset’s candidacy as Secretary General of the Council of Europe, which has its headquarters in Strasbourg. The former Health Minister is currently lobbying several states for his candidacy and was also present at the party congress.

While still in the Federal Council, it became known that in July 2022, Berset triggered a French air police operation with a private jet when he entered France’s restricted airspace, as the “NZZ” reports.

In his speech, Jans defended his asylum plans, which led to criticism from the young SP party Juso. Jans immediately told Juso that his door was open for a conversation. “I’m happy, look at my fingers.” A well-functioning asylum system is needed. “The goal is solidarity.” Those who need protection must receive consistent protection.

EU hat and Basel Läckerli

At the end of the speech Jans returned to Berset. If he manages to be elected Secretary General, he will probably have to negotiate with the EU about joining the Council of Europe. To help him get started, Jans gave Berset a roof cap with the EU stars. “It’s not a Borsalino, but it could come in handy at work.” The Borsolino was Berset’s trademark during the corona pandemic.

And to make the choice a success, Berset received a bag of “Basler Läckerli”. Jans brought this to the farmer during a hearing when he was elected to the Federal Council. The results are known: Jans won the elections with probably many farmer votes (bro).
