With a total score of 2:4 against Sporting Lisbon, YB has to say goodbye to the European stage in the eighth finals of the Europa League. However, the sobering conclusion is even clearer than the score: the Bernese had no chance against the Portuguese.

All the more flattering is the 1-1 result in the second leg in Lisbon, which the brilliant David von Ballmoos scored in the goal and striker Silvère Ganvoula secured with a penalty goal in the closing stages. Even though this draw in itself does not benefit the Bernese, it could now be worth its weight in gold for Switzerland.

Additional starting place

Thanks to this point, we have overtaken Austria in the UEFA five-year rankings. And are now in twelfth place in the rankings with 32,575 points – an increase of 32,400 points. However important this twelfth place is: for the Super League it would mean that two teams could continue to participate in Champions League qualification in the 2025/26 season. The champion would only have to survive one round, while the runner-up in the competition would have to overcome three obstacles.

Moreover, with twelfth place you guarantee an extra starting place in the qualification for the Europa League. The cup winner would qualify for the Europa League play-offs – and therefore at least for the Conference League.

Confrontation against Storm

But despite the leadership, we cannot sit back and relax. Now it’s time for the showdown against the Austrians! With Servette and Sturm Graz, one club from each country is in the eighth finals of the Conference League. If the people of Geneva do at least as well as the people of Graz, we are assured of twelfth place. (mo)
