After 90 minutes at the San Siro, Atlético Madrid has a double clean sheet. Zero goals. But also zero shots on the opponent’s goal. The Madrilenians are certainly not the first team to fail to find a solution against the defense around Nati keeper Yann Sommer (35) in the 1-0 win over Inter. He can look forward to his 21st clean sheet of the season in all competitions.

It is a song that is second to none. This season Sommer has kept more clean sheets than he has conceded in total. That’s a paltry 14 in 32 competitive matches. In the premier class alone, Sommer kept four clean sheets in six games. And in the 3-3 draw on matchday 5 in Lisbon, when Inter had made up a 3-0 deficit at half-time, Sommer was spared. His replacement scored one more goal in a CL match than Sommer scored in his six.

Summer joy for the team

After the match, Sommer is asked on the BeIn Sports channel about the next clean sheet of the season. “Good and important,” the veteran calls it. Inter’s secret to success? “A good balance between attack and defense” and “good harmony on the field” between the goalkeeper and those in front of him. It is not the first time that Sommer emphasizes the quality of his defenders.

What else should he do after his frontmen have once again defended everything Atlético had to offer in terms of (contemplative) offensive efforts. And because Marko Arnautovic rewarded Inter’s good performance in the 79th minute, the Nerazzuri took the lead in the second leg. There is still “a lot to do there,” Sommer says.

Thanks to their rock-solid defense, Inter should still have excellent chances going into the second leg on March 13. Or as Sommer puts the highlight of the team: “It is of course a small advantage if you always defend well and with this quality you can create opportunities at the front of the team. That makes a good team.”
