A beach trip has turned into a nightmare for a family in the US state of Florida: two siblings were buried in the sand while digging on the beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. One of the children died as a result of the accident, local media reported on Tuesday (local time), citing rescuers. The boy and girl, ages 7 and 5, were initially taken to a hospital in critical condition after being freed from the sand, according to NBC Miami.
Private videos published in news reports showed adults frantically digging in a sand hole with buckets and shovels. Initially, the father found his boy, but the daughter was still somewhere under the sand, an eyewitness tells Lokaal10.
The girl is said to have been trapped under the sand for about 15 minutes before rescuers finally managed to free her. Reports say the hole was up to six feet deep.
It was unclear how such a large hole could have appeared on the public beach promenade in the southeastern part of the state. According to NBC Miami, there have been previous, sometimes fatal, accidents where sand holes suddenly collapsed and buried people. (SDA)
