News from the Formenton case: The 24-year-old Ambri attacker was released by his club at the beginning of this week to travel to Canada. Authorities in London, Ontario, asked him, along with four other players from Canada’s 2018 U20 team, to report to the site.
Charges have now been filed against Formenton. “London police have charged several players, including Alex Formenton, over a 2018 allegation,” the Ambri player’s legal team said in a statement on Sunday.
According to the indictment, Formenton was guilty of sexual assault in 2018, together with four teammates of the then U20 national team. As “The Globe” reports, it is still unclear whether the other four players have already presented themselves in London.
“Alex will vigorously defend his innocence and asks not to rush to judgment without hearing all the evidence,” Formenton’s lawyers said. The presumption of innocence still applies. (sbe)
