Long Covid as an underestimated problem: there is a risk of long-term consequences due to short-term practices

As if the problem had already been solved, Swiss hospitals are cutting back services for long Covid patients. The problem is acute, clinics are overcrowded with victims – and, as at the cantonal hospital of Grisons, the reason for the cessation of care is a lack of resources.

The capitulation is symptomatic of how we are coping with the long-term effects of the pandemic. Some give up because the situation is too difficult for them; the rest close their eyes in fear of what lies ahead. They never did anything for the victims, so they never did anything bad.

This must change as tens of thousands of people, often referred to as imaginary patients, suffer from the effects of the Sars-CoV-2 virus: like whiplash sufferers, Long Covid patients receive little or no professional care or treatment. It’s also because health and disability insurance companies are avoiding costs that will one day inevitably burden them.

Efforts are needed to save money in the health care system. But those affected by Long Covid are extremely ill-suited for this. Anyone who suffers from physical or mental illness and can no longer work or can only work to a limited extent needs urgent help.

Otherwise it will be very expensive in the long run.
