Bayern are usually a pretty humorless bunch when it comes to transfer matters. When a direct competitor has the courage to play too hard, the best players are simply bought away. Robert Lewandowski greets you. But this season everything is different. Instead of trapping super talent Florian Wirtz (20) and weakening Leverkusen in the summer, the direct competitor is strengthened even further.
Josip Stanisic (23), born in Munich, moves to the factory club on a rental basis. A much sought-after man thanks to his versatility, who can act as both a right back and a central defender. The Croatia international played 41 competitive games for Bayern. Former coach Julian Nagelsmann said: “Stani is a reliable player. It doesn’t always swing up towards world class, but it doesn’t always swing down either. That is important at this age.”
It’s still not enough for Bayern. Stanisic is loaned to Leverkusen. And this despite the fact that Bayern has holes in the team, both in the center of defense and at the right back position. Stanisic was therefore surprised when the deal came about. “I was a little surprised,” the 23-year-old said. In the summer it was back and forth. “I never knew: if Benji Pavard stays, Benji Pavard goes, and what about me? I was kind of hanging in the air.”
Pavard now plays for Inter Milan. And at Bayer Leverkusen they are laughing their heads off. Because Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso) and Odilon Kossounou (Ivory Coast), two of the three central defenders, are busy at the Africa Cup of Nations. And Stanisic will step into the breach against Augsburg on Saturday.
And Bavaria? They have holes in the defense. Up front, however, they acted quite humorlessly in the transfer market this summer. 100 million men Harry Kane salutes you.
