The confetti remains have barely been removed before the ice hockey professionals have to get back to work. The January 2 games are much more popular with fans than with players: those who come to the stadium with a masterful hangover are usually better off in the stands than on the ice.
In the past, a stadium announcer could provide entertainment on Berchtold’s Day with the Kalau “stadium and players full” without risking his speaking career at the same time. After all, he was right.
Nowadays such a thing would be unthinkable, because firstly, humor in public spaces is strictly prohibited and secondly, the players’ association would be immediately ready to file a complaint for defamation.
Today’s professionals, who have been polished in the youth academies, only allow themselves to get drunk on kale and ginger smoothies – a few exceptions prove the rule – otherwise the fitness tracker in the cerebral cortex immediately sounds the alarm and the player runs the risk of being demolished by his own nutritional guru of the club.
And then HCD striker Yannick Frehner comes along and admits he was almost drunk in the first third after the win over Lugano. You can do that if you previously secured the game winner and were somehow in charge on the ice. An incentive to drink? Not at all. Frehner was finally heard in full in the post-match interview, and there was also the success at the Spengler Cup, which was to be celebrated in the new year.
Is it all a matter of dosage? Clearly. But it also applies to everything that seems healthy. Have you ever heard that one? Some people go to the toilet in good health and come away with a bad feeling. Therefore: dare to do a little more Frehner every now and then.
