Tips from the baker: How to find the king in the Epiphany cake?

On January 6, the lust for power will once again become the supreme discipline. As every year, several hundred thousand Epiphany cakes are sold on the stalls. They all have a secret: a king made of plastic that will make whoever finds it king for a day. Therefore, choosing the right cake is very important. Blick spoke to several master bakers. Some revealed their tricks.

The king should always be assembled by hand. This is noticeable in the shape of the ball of yeast dough. This seems mostly edited. Therefore, it is not wrong to reach for the most shapeless piece.

The king is pressed into the raw dough. If the baker cannot hide the puncture point, it remains clearly visible. So it might help to take a look at the cake base.

Careful bakers hide the puncture mark by rolling the dough ball again. This means it is usually smaller than others. Humility can be rewarded when choosing a slice of cake.

It is an unwritten law that the king should not be in the middle of the cake. Most bakers stick to this. For gourmets, reaching for the middle piece is still worth it because it’s usually the largest.

Even with tips from master bakers, there’s no guarantee of the crown. So there’s no harm in shaking hands with the chimney sweep, throwing coins into the fountain, and scratching a pig’s belly before choosing your slice of cake. Don’t forget to wash your hands before eating the cake!
