Kilde with the best time for Hintermann: Odermatt sacrifices Bormio training for the ski test

On Thursday, world champion Marco Odermatt will make his next attempt to win his first World Cup downhill in Bormio (Italy). In the final training, the man from Nidwalden finished in 9th place. He lost 96 hundredths to the fastest, the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde.

That sounds like a lot, but Odermatt used even more tactics than others and got up well before the finish. He also “sacrificed” training to test a new ski. “I skied with a completely different ski,” he says. Bindings, plate, the ski – everything has changed compared to the day before. He doesn’t yet know what he will bet on during the race.

Two Swiss are faster on the Stelvio than Odermatt. Niels Hintermann sets the second fastest time (+0.32). And he is a bit surprised himself. “I had no grip today, I don’t know if I hit a stone somewhere,” he said after his ride. Alexis Monney is directly ahead of Odermatt in 8th place (+0.93).

“It was easier during the first training”

The Swiss agree that the slopes have become even more icy. “Denise Biellmann would have tears of joy in her eyes on this circuit,” says Stefan Rogentin, pointing to the figure skater on the extremely icy and slippery Stelvio. “When I looked at it I thought it would have more grip, but I think it does. It was easier during the first training.” But his result is much the same. After 16th the day before, he is now 15th (+1.96).

Justin Murisier is happy with 20th place, 2.23 seconds behind. “The result is encouraging,” he says. «I was looking forward to Bormio. Because it is a difficult race, you need courage here and I like that.” But he also admits that he is still a bit confused. “I got the flu after Alta Badia and had body aches.” That’s why he held back a bit in the first training. Now he has attacked a bit more and says: “That went well. I see a lot of potential for the race.”
