Spaniard Jon Rahm (29) changed sides 24 days before the end of the negotiation period between the PGA and the LIV Tour and will in future be paid from Saudi Arabia. The winner of this year’s Masters and the 2021 US Open made this known in an interview on Fox News and in a short Instagram post.

Various media outlets estimate the value of the three-year contract at between $300 and $600 million. According to the American news agency AP, Rahm could earn more than the PGA Tour currently pays out in annual prize money for all its events (about $460 million).

Million-dollar salaries cause unrest

The LIV has caused massive unrest in recent months, persuading players to move with guaranteed salaries worth millions. Before Rahm, five-time major winner Brooks Koepka, US Open and Masters winner Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau (all US), who won the 2020 US Open, changed sides. The first really big name was Phil Mickelson.

It is impossible to predict what impact Rahm’s move will have on the future structures of the sport. In June, the three golf series PGA, LIV and the European DP World Tour jointly announced that they had reached a “groundbreaking agreement to unify golf” and would work together in the future.
