If you have enough yourself, you have to help other people. This is the credo of Simon Hrubec (32). That is why the ZSC goalkeeper founded the “Saves help” foundation in his home country of the Czech Republic in 2018. He wants to do the right thing together with professional colleagues. In the Czech Republic, all goalkeepers from the highest extra division now participate and donate a certain amount for each parade.

The non-profit organization has grown considerably. A total of 70 goalkeepers are already participating in this charity campaign. There are also star NHL goaltenders present, such as Karel Vejmelka (27, Czech Republic) from Arizona and Vitek Vanecek (27, Czech Republic) from the New Jersey Devils.

Hrubec’s sincere desire is growing to do international charity work – initially in Switzerland, his current place of residence. The 32-year-old contacted Zug’s master goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni (36) in the spring. “He is the superstar in Switzerland, the face of the goalkeepers,” is how the Nati keeper explains his choice. Genoni thought about it. “It was important to me that the donations stayed in Switzerland. We also have people who need help,” the 36-year-old explains.

How well do you know the goalkeepers in the National League?

When Hrubec assured that this was also his intention, the two goalkeepers pulled together. It took a few months before everything was in order in Switzerland. But the association “Saves help Swiss” has now been founded and registered. “Now it’s official,” Genoni and Hrubec announce, beaming.

They have already received confirmation from 16 other goalkeepers from the National League, so there will be a total of 18 goalkeepers participating, who will be announced in the coming days on the “Saves help” social channels. Everyone donates at least one franc for each regular season parade. That’s actually the basics. “Each of the goalkeepers is free to expand it to the play-offs, CHL or the national team,” Hrubec explains.

This can amount to a significant amount. On average you can expect about 900 saves per goalkeeper. Genoni made 1,317 saves over the entire season including the play-offs, Hrubec made 1,147. In this championship they already reached 565 (Hrubec) and 466 (Genoni). “We can help that easily,” Hrubec emphasizes.

The way in which they want to support is also clear and important to the two goalkeepers: “We never donate the money directly, but use it to finance something that helps the affected people.” Consider, for example, aids for sick or disabled people who are not covered by health insurance, such as a special wheelchair. Or special therapies for people with psychological or health problems that are not reimbursed by insurance.

In the past, for example, Czech goalkeepers have purchased new mobility machines for a rehabilitation center or supplied new sleds for a sled hockey team (pairs hockey). Having only just started in Switzerland, Genoni and Hrubec are still dependent on suggestions (see above) about who their donations can benefit.

Their goal is to make someone happy with a donation every three months. The two goalkeepers promise that the money from all parades will be fully used for relief efforts. “That’s what we stand for with our name and the goalkeepers have confidence in us.”
