Great Britain: Migration Minister resigns over dispute over asylum policy Betting on the Israeli economy shortly before Hamas attack: someone made millions this way

The dispute over the tightening of British immigration laws is becoming increasingly open within Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party. On Wednesday, the minister of state responsible for migration, Robert Jenrick, resigned. The MP, who is actually considered a confidant of Sunak, did not go far enough with a bill through which the Prime Minister wanted to enforce a controversial asylum treaty with Rwanda.

“I cannot stay in my office when I so clearly disagree with the direction of the government’s immigration policy,” Jenrick wrote on Platform X on Wednesday evening. Department head James Cleverly confirmed the staff in parliament.

The planned law aims to declare the East African country a safe third country. Sunak even wants to expressly declare a British human rights law inapplicable. But hardliners such as former Home Secretary Suella Braverman and now Jenrick are calling for even more explicit measures, including withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights, to avoid legal action in international courts. Jenrick, who had effectively been appointed as a counterweight to right-wing politician Braverman, had recently moved further and further to the right.

The British government wants to immediately deport asylum seekers who enter the country illegally, regardless of their origin, to Rwanda. They would have to apply for asylum there, but would not be allowed to return to Britain. The High Court in London also stopped the project on the grounds of constitutional deficiencies in Rwanda. The new law now aims to sidestep these concerns. (sda/dpa)
