Before the start of the qualifying campaign for the 2024 European Championship, Kazakhstan and Moldova were not even among the extensive circle of candidates for a ticket for the final in Germany. Neither national team had ever appeared on the big stage of world football, let alone competed in a major tournament. However, that could change on Monday evening.
Before this year’s group stage, the Moldovan national team only achieved victories in qualifying matches against other so-called lightweights such as San Marino and Andorra. The opportunities for the Moldovans are now better than ever. Albania has secured the group victory in Group E. But second place is still there. This is also because Moldova picked up important points with a surprising 3-2 win over Poland and last-minute goals against the Faroe Islands and the Albanians.
The Czech Republic (12 points) and Moldova (10 points) are currently competing in a direct duel for the last qualifying place. With a win on Monday evening, the Moldovan national team will travel to Germany next summer.
The first leg in Moldova ended goalless. While the Moldovans now want to seize their opportunity, the Czech Republic is not in the best shape. Due to a party scandal, three stars had to leave the camp of the Czech national team just before the group stage final.
Switzerland also plays a significant role in this crucial affair: 35-year-old Sandro Schärer from Schwyz was appointed as referee for the match in Olomouc, Czech Republic.
It will also be exciting in Group H, where Denmark has already secured its ticket to the European Championship. Behind them, a real showdown looms between Slovenia (19 points) and Kazakhstan (18 points). Only one point separates the two teams.
