“You are incredible”: this is how Fischer says goodbye to the Union fans

Urs Fischer is a living legend in Köpenick.

Urs Fischer (57) worked at Union Berlin for more than five years. He led the club from Köpenick from the gray mass of the 2nd Bundesliga to heights that were never thought possible. He was promoted in his first season, after which he moved seamlessly into the extended top flight of German football, including qualification for the European Cup. With his shirt-sleeve manner, Fischer quickly won the hearts of fans in East Berlin.

The highlight came this season: for the very first time in the club’s history, Union Berlin took part in the Champions League. But an unprecedented negative run this autumn, with fourteen games without a win in a row, has now cost him his position, despite his status as a local hero. Until the end, Fischer was assured of the fans’ support. They also applauded him after the recent 4-0 defeat against Leverkusen.

Farewell message on Instagram

After the divorce, Fischer sent an emotional farewell letter to his fans and the club environment on his personal Instagram channel. “Dear Unioners, what we have been through together,” he begins the message.

“An incredible journey began in 2018, which celebrated its first major success in 2019 with promotion to the 1st Bundesliga. From then on it went up steadily until the worst time hit us all in 2020… Corona!” But with the support of the fans we got through this difficult period. And the success story could continue.

“Cup semi-finals, Conference League, Europa League and, to top it all off, participation in the Champions League. Crazy, right?!!!” But in football there cannot always be success, he continues. “Unfortunately there are always two sides to a coin and the past few weeks have cost us all a lot of energy. We have tried everything, The team spent a lot, fought against this negative spiral with iron will, but unfortunately it yielded nothing!”

“You are great!”

A new impetus is now needed to get the team back on track. “Sometimes a different face, a different speech from the dugout helps a team to kick-start development and that’s why my journey with you ends here.” He is very grateful for the trust shown and the “unlimited support”.

“With Union I got to know and appreciate a special club with fantastic fans. My thanks go to the players with whom I have had the opportunity to work during this period, Markus Hoffmann (assistant coach, editor’s note) and the entire team, which has always actively supported me.”

He ends the message on an ironic note. “Finally,” he writes, based on the Swiss-German word that is deeply entrenched in his vocabulary and caused amusement in many places after his arrival in Berlin: “Thank you very much to the fans… you are incredible!!! !! We are very fortunate that we have been able to experience this extremely positive form of support. I wish Union only the best and am convinced that they will manage to stay in the competition… because Union belongs in the 1st Bundesliga!” (sbe)
