Urs Fischer and Union Berlin: This incredible series of bankruptcies puts an end to the fairy tale

July 1, 2018 will forever be fondly remembered by Union fans. It was Urs Fischer’s first day on the job in East Berlin – and the beginning of a fairytale that ends with an incredible series of bankruptcies.

Urs Fischer (57) led the Iron Men to the Bundesliga for the first time. As a friendly newcomer with few financial resources, the club impressed and finished in eleventh, seventh, fifth and fourth place. During the same period, an investor with big ambitions – the Champions League – got involved with arch-rivals Hertha Berlin, squandered millions and were relegated to the second division. So Union and not Hertha filled the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on Champions League nights.

An unprecedented series of bankruptcies cost Fischer his job

It was the absolute pinnacle of Fischer’s development over the past five years. Big names came with the Champions League showcase. Old master Leonardo Bonucci or DFB player Robin Gosens, for example. And with three wins at the start of the season (cup and two Bundesliga wins), the highs seemed to continue. Union was at the top of the Bundesliga after the second matchday! Two and a half months later, Union is at the bottom of the table.

A 3-0 home defeat against Leipzig signaled the end of Fischer in Berlin. Union has been winless since August 26 and won 4-1 at promoted Darmstadt. 13 of the 14 games were lost, including a last-minute defeat in the Champions League premiere at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid.

Six of the thirteen defeats were only one goal difference. The recent points win at SSC Napoli was also seen as a positive sign. The 4-0 defeat against Leverkusen in Fischer’s farewell performance is the clearest defeat of the season – and at the same time the end of a fairytale story that Urs Fischer wrote together with Union Berlin over the past five years.
