When Aaron Ramsdale (25) moved to Arsenal in 2021, he immediately took over as the Gunners’ regular goalkeeper. In his first season in London he guarded the goal in 34 Premier League games, and in all 38 last season.
And now his main job is to take care of the bank. The 25-year-old was allowed to play the first four games, after which David Raya (28), on loan from Brentford, was put in front of him. The decision by coach Mikel Arteta (41) took its toll on the national goalkeeper (four caps), as he recently admitted: “There are days when I suffer and it hurts me that I don’t play.”
Now father Nick also says in the podcast ‘The Highbury Squad’ that his son is having difficulty with the role of replacement: ‘Aaron has lost his smile. It’s hard to see him like that.” Raya is not to blame at all: “It’s not his fault. He’s a great goalkeeper and, says Aaron, a great guy.”
Instead, he criticizes coach Arteta: “It’s about the way the decision was communicated to him. We don’t know why it happened like this.” When Nick Ramsdale spoke to Arteta in the summer of 2021, before his son was signed, the Spaniard assured him that he really wanted Aaron. “And now Raya was on the market and he wanted have him.”
Only in May did Ramsdale extend his contract with the English number two. In retrospect, that was completely pointless, his father thinks: “Why would you renew a goalkeeper and two months later he’s playing second fiddle?”
Like Ramsdale himself, his father now assures that the 25-year-old will do everything he can to become number 1 for the Gunners again. Until then, he will support Raya as best he can. Nick Ramsdale: “Aaron has to live with it and he does, even though you’ve never spoken to him.”
His newborn son Ronnie should cheer him up during this difficult time. “We love you so much,” Ramsdale wrote on Instagram. The boy was born last weekend and the Arsenal goalkeeper’s laughter returned. (ch)
