The French sports newspaper L’Équipe published a photo of the bloodied face of Lyon coach Fabio Grosso on its front page on Monday. The 45-year-old was hit by shards of glass after his team’s bus was pelted with stones. Assistant Raffaele Longo was also injured. There were also attacks on buses carrying Lyon fans, and according to police reports, supporters were slightly injured.
“These unacceptable acts deny the values of football and sport, and their perpetrators must all be found and severely punished,” French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The photos are scandalous. Such actions are characterized by “stupidity and hatred.” According to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, there have already been nine arrests. The politician also reported on broadcaster BFM that five police officers were injured.
Riots are not uncommon at matches between the two clubs.
