The anti-Israel messages of the international branch of Fridays for Future (FFF) were largely influenced by a German activist. As the “Tagesspiegel” reports, the former press spokesperson for the local group FFF Mainz boasted: Hasan Ozbayon X (formerly Twitter) that he had ‘pushed’ these messages.
In the posts on Instagram, the international account of the climate movement calls for solidarity with Palestine and describes Israel as a colonial power that is planning genocide against the Palestinians. The German branch of Fridays for Future subsequently distanced itself from any form of anti-Semitism.
Özbay is no stranger. According to information from the Tagesspiegel, he was repeatedly warned by Fridays for Future for allegedly insulting other activists.
During a demonstration in Lützerath he wore a sweater with the portrait of the Palestinian terrorist Leila Chaled. After these violations, he was banned first at the federal level and then from the local group Fridays for Future in Mainz.
But Özbay is not only not welcome at Fridays for Future, he has also been banned from several left-wing projects in his hometown of Mainz. The reason given by the cultural center “Haus Mainusch” was that it would insult anyone who did not describe Israel as a “colonial power” as a racist.
After the attacks by the terrorist organization Hamas on October 7, he wished all Palestinians “a very pleasant decolonization.” According to research by the “Tagesspiegel” and the “Jüdische Allgemeine”, Özbay also seems to be much more concerned about Israel than about climate protection.
According to chat logs available at the “Jüdische Allgemeine”, Özbay has repeatedly tried to get Fridays for Future to post messages about the conflict in the Middle East since 2021. Any criticism of it or of the published content was consistently dismissed as racism. When a user asked why he didn’t create his own page for such topics instead of using a climate protection page for it, he didn’t answer.
Özbay did not want to comment on the accusations against the “Tagesspiegel”, as it is called.
