Only football writes such stories. 388 days after his horror injury, broken tibia and double fibula, in FC St. Gallen’s 2-1 win against the Bernese Young Boys, Fabian Schubert (29) was once again on everyone’s lips in the recent 2-1 win against the champions.
Because the Austrian played an important role in the Eastern Swiss team inflicting the first defeat of the season on the Bernese team in the Super League. “I didn’t even notice the 2-1 win a year ago. “I was already somewhere else because of all the medications I was taking,” laughs Schubert. «Of course YB is always linked to my injury. All the better that I was now able to actively contribute to the victory.”
Schubert was not only able to help with the 1-1 equalizer, he also moved past central defender Albert Vallci (28, two goals) on St. Gallen’s internal top scorer list. Schubert now has three goals this season, although he has not started a game and has come off the bench six times.
In the 2-1 win against Lucerne he “only” provided the assist to equalize, in the 1-1 draw in Zurich he saved a point in injury time with his first goal of the season and in the 2-1 -victory against Lausanne- Sportively he put the Espen on the way to victory. Now the striker turned things around against YB, scoring the important equalizer eleven minutes after being substituted and just three minutes after Elia had given Bern the lead.
Schubert finally came full circle with the win against YB. “When I came on as a substitute against YB, I had no idea about the injury a year ago. I always said I wanted to be done with it and not have to be afraid anymore. Otherwise I would have had to stop playing football,” he explains.
It is good for St. Gallen that Schubert continues to play football.
