When you think you’ve seen the worst, the Assembly surprises

I am deeply outraged by the horrific incident that has come to light regarding the National Assembly of Panama. I cannot but express my astonishment and dismay at the news about a minor hospitalized while participating in the Youth Assembly organized by the Ministry of Education and the legislative body. It is difficult to understand how this body, whose main function should be to represent the interests of the people, could be involved in such a despicable act.
My complete solidarity with the mother and family of the minor student. No human being should go through such an experience, and it is important that justice prevails. The victim’s mother deserves all the support and sympathy at this very difficult time. No one should have to face such pain and anguish.
It is imperative that the authorities act immediately and effectively to fully investigate this case and bring those responsible to justice. Full and rigorous enforcement of the law is essential to send a clear message that acts of sexual abuse, regardless of who the perpetrators are, will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The community must have confidence that measures will be taken for the safety of young people and all citizens.

This scandal is a grim reminder of the urgent need for drastic changes in the Panamanian National Assembly. Public confidence in this body has been seriously undermined and it is crucial that significant reforms are implemented to restore integrity and transparency in politics. The inclusion of new faces and the promotion of generational change are key steps in this process.
Ultimately, the most important thing is that justice is served and that such an unfortunate event does not happen again in the future. Panamanian society deserves a political system where its leaders are examples of ethics and responsibility, and this incident should be a wake-up call to achieve significant changes in the National Assembly and society as a whole.
