Since Urs Fischer took over at Union Berlin five years ago, things have only improved for the ‘Iron’. Last spring they even had a taste of the national title, but ultimately they finished fourth and qualified directly for the Champions League. A mega success for the cult club, which barely avoided ending up in the 3rd Bundesliga before Fischer’s arrival.
But as Fischer learned after two championship titles and a double in Basel: success raises expectations. This means: after the 0-2 home defeat against Hoffenheim, Union has ended up in a crisis in the eyes of the German media.
It was the fourth league defeat in a row. This happened only once in Fischer’s era: in the autumn of 2019 in the first season after promotion. But at the time, Union was a nameless team and a newcomer, and no one said the word crisis.
It’s different today. Today, Union has top team status, signing players from Chelsea (David Fofana), Inter Milan (Robin Gosens) and, most recently, Italian legend Leonardo Bonucci, one of the world’s best defenders in recent years. This increases the requirements. Fischer can say like a prayer wheel for as long as he wants: “Our first goal is 40 points.” The magic sign to stay in the competition.
It would still be wrong to predict a crisis. Because Union confidently won the first two games of the season. Because we have only played five matchdays in the Bundesliga. Because the opponents in the league defeats were Wolfsburg, RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim. All teams that are in remarkably early form. And in between there was a 0-1 defeat at the Bernabéu against Real Madrid on their Champions League debut, with the goal not disappointing until well into stoppage time. Then the Spanish media bowed to Fischer’s Union. And Real coach Carlo Ancelotti praised: “Berlin defended very well.”
Crisis? Rather a lack of competitive luck and extremely strong opponents. But it is precisely these situations that Union has won in recent years and stormed into the Champions League. Self-confidence must have certainly had a crack. And one thing is clear: there must be a sense of success in the next match against newly promoted Heidenheim – if there were to be another defeat, the word crisis would no longer simply be evoked.
The second Swiss Bundesliga coach must dress warmer than Urs Fischer: Gerardo Seoane is also waiting for his first league victory with Borussia Mönchengladbach in his fifth attempt. Despite the comeback of Nati defender Nico Elvedi into the starting eleven after his substitution failed, there was a 0-1 defeat against Leipzig. Historically: Gladbach has never lost the first three home games of a season.
