The newcomers in Sion, which has been relegated from the Super League, have not just signed an annual contract. This is worth mentioning, because until now it had to be assumed that in Valais the lights should go out at the end of the season when it comes to professional management. President and club owner Christian Constantin has recently announced it several times. Instead, trainer Didier Tholot has a one-year contract with an option to extend for two years. And striker Dejan Sorgic an extra option for a year. So has CC messed up his plans yet?
The architect explains: “The Canton of Valais, the City of Sion and I have given ourselves until the end of the year to evaluate and refine a plan that provides for the continuation of professional operations. Finally, to put the plan into practice, I will apply for a license for the Swiss football league. Otherwise, no.” This request must be received by the league no later than March 2, 2024.
Very roughly, it is planned to build a brand new stadium for 120 million Swiss francs. In addition, an academy with a training center for 30 million francs. And an integrated complex of 1000 apartments that will finance the entire project.
CC explains the details: “The plan provides for a contribution from the canton of 45 million. The city 50 million, mainly by making the building land available. And me 55 million.” The inauguration of the new stadium, which will be built from scratch and located next to the old tourbillon, is on July 1, 2029. The academy and training center, on the other hand, which is expected to be located next to the Valais Agricultural School in the airport region should be ready for use in 2026.
It is exciting how the stadium and the professional exploitation will be financed from now on. CC: «This should happen thanks to the large residential complex, which covers 90,000 square meters. Here’s how: We finance the stadium with the first 166 apartments to be sold. After that, another 420 apartments will be sold. The third tranche, another 420 apartments, will then become rental properties. They will become the property of a foundation yet to be established.”
Of the rental income, nine million Swiss francs go to the club annually via this foundation. That is the average amount Constantin has invested in the club season after season to fund professional operations. “So that replaces my previous patronage,” says CC.
It all sounds very nice and logical. Let’s see how the negotiations go. And when does Constantin want to stop? «The Tintin series is aimed at boys between the ages of seven and 77. So I stop working at 77.” You should know: first of all, CC is 66, so he would continue to work for five years after the inauguration of the new tourbillon. But only in his main job, not in football. Second: In Valais he is also nicknamed “Tintin”, like the hero from the comics.
