Look for a new hockey boss: Krueger basket – now a handball legend should do it

On Wednesday, during the joint meeting of the clubs of the National League and the Swiss League, the candidate will be nominated to succeed Michael Rindlisbacher (67), the outgoing chairman of the SIHF. It should be Stefan Schärer (58) who has a clear lead over the apparently last remaining fellow candidate Anton Gäumann (63). And then in September at the General Assembly to be officially elected as the new hockey boss.

Schärer is a handball legend and played more than 200 caps for Switzerland in the 1980s and 1990s. After his sports career he became a successful entrepreneur and through his professional career he came into contact with the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation SIHF. Schärer tells Blick about the reasons for his application as new hockey boss: “I find this mandate as chairman of the Board of Directors extremely exciting. It touches my sports heart.”

Before Schärer became candidate number 1, according to Blick information, other personalities were also approached in the search for a successor to Rindlisbacher, which was of course not so easy in the beginning. One was ex-Nati coach Ralph Krueger (63). “I was asked softly,” he confirmed.

But he brushed it off right away, justifying it as follows: “I don’t want to take on an executive role.” He has other priorities in his life and prefers to see himself in the background as an advisor. “The position of chairman of the board of directors has become very complex,” continues Krueger. He is currently involved in a number of other exciting projects, but they are not yet ready for decision making.
