A company in Madrid forces its telemarketers to continue working next to the corpse of a colleague

Author:

“She’s lying on the floor, and we’re taking calls,” other employees reported

“It looked like a horror movie” That’s the Konecta BTO Group worker’s summary of what happened last Tuesday. At 2 p.m., one of the company’s employees suddenly died at her workplace while performing her usual duties: “A colleague had to hold her so she wouldn’t fall off the chair, Immediately after that, they tried to revive her actively and passively, to make her stay with us a little longer, so that her heartbeat would continue to sing the chords of life, but no, an hour before 2 p.m. hours stopped forever», explained in a press release from the Federal Telemarketing Sector of CGT. According to the letter, the workers assured that they were not “prepared for these things” and that they reacted “on the fly, late and badly”.

They assure that “out of respect” that their partner deserves, they feel obliged to tell what happened “without the intention to hurt, to hurt feelings and above all to prevent some Kafkaesque events from happening again”.

They explain that at the time of the event, Inma was not alone and that the platform was as lively as any other day. What happened next is incredible. Inma’s colleagues decry that they had to continue working for two hours answering calls and waiting on hold next to the body: «When we heard the news through confusing WhatsApp messages, we didn’t believe it. ‘She’s lying on the floor and we’re taking calls’ ‘Are you taking calls?’ ‘Yes, they tell us to keep taking calls,'” company employees reported.

The CGT union assures that “when entering the 6th floor of San Romualdo, everything looked like a B-series horror movie”: “Besides our partner, someone answered the call. The service went on as if nothing had happened. It was necessary to STOP STOP STOP, evacuate the center. Call for reason as someone repeated over and over “We are an essential service.”

Workers’ representatives have already expressed rejection of those responsible in Konecta for such behavior and condemned the deficiency “humanity, empathy and respect” shown by the company. In addition, they ensure that the day after the event the Health and Safety Committee held a meeting with the company to address liability, recognize what happened and implement a protocol for dealing with these cases.

In the UGT, they also asked the company for a protocol of action and condemned some facts that, in their opinion, show a lack of humanity in the company: “We do not understand why, if they also have the possibility to work remotely, the staff was not immediately sent home, thus avoiding witnessing this tragic event, not that they worked for more than two hours with a physical partner present.
