Easter, Ascension Day, Pentecost – on public holidays, a mile-long traffic jam on the Gotthard is just as certain as amen in the church. Pentecost Saturday registered a traffic jam of up to 20 kilometers in front of the Gotthard north portal.
But traffic is not only at a standstill on the autobahn, the streets are also lined with tin columns in the Uri villages. To escape the traffic jam, impatient motorists leave the motorway in Göschenen, Amsteg or Erstfeld.
The people of Uri have had enough of that. With a cantonal initiative, the canton is demanding a booking system for Gotthard passages from the federal government. Central National Councilor Simon Stadler (35) even brings the idea of a dynamic toll system into play.
Uri state councilor Josef Dittli (66) is also annoyed by the traffic flowing into the villages. “Depending on the length of the traffic jam, motorists leave the highway at the Altdorf exit and then drive on the canton road through the villages up the Reusstal to Göschenen and then take the pass road to the south,” reports the liberal. Due to the alternative traffic, the canton road between Erstfeld and Göschenen was repeatedly blocked.
Many drivers let their navigation systems redirect them to hidden routes. Which sometimes leads to bizarre scenes: “We have had kilometers of clogged dirt roads that are actually only intended for agriculture and local residents.”
It is therefore clear to Dittli: “In the event of a traffic jam, we must ensure that north-south through traffic remains on the highway.” But he comes up with an original idea: “Nowadays the navigation systems ensure that traffic is diverted to the cantonal roads,” Dittli complains. “The navigation system will ensure that the cars stay on the highway in the future.”
In a proposal he has just submitted, he now wants to know from the Bundesrat whether he sees a way to influence “so that the navigation systems of the vehicles are provided with information in such a way that the cantonal road is not automatically used as an alternative to traffic jams”.
Dittli foresees that “at peak times, for example, there will be a temporary driving ban on country roads and side roads with shuttle service and impassability on the canton road, which will be digitally entered into the navigation systems”. Or the systems must at least be able to report that the alternative roads are congested and cannot be used.
The liberal wants to prevent transit traffic from continuing to cause traffic jams on normal roads. “Then the public bus service will no longer work and – even worse – rescue or emergency services will also be blocked.” The Federal Council must therefore in principle also show what it intends to do against the alternative traffic on the north-south axis.
