Members of the cabin crews union (Kapers) terminated the collective bargaining agreement (GAV) at the end of April 2024.

The wage dispute with the cabin crew escalated in Swiss. Members of the cabin crew’s union (Kapers) voted by a net majority of nearly 85 percent on Tuesday to terminate the collective bargaining agreement (GAV). “During the pandemic, we took a step back and brought a lot to the company. Yet we are treated like dirt. Enough is enough with HK*, a long-time flight attendant in Switzerland who wants to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation!”

It’s clear in an interview with HK: Switzerland is threatened with the worst case – air traffic paralysis during the summer holidays! “I’m ready to go on strike,” says HK. Air traffic paralysis could hit the summer months of next year as the GAV is terminated on April 30, 2024 and the absolute obligation of peace applies until then.

4000 francs is not enough

It still looked good at the beginning of the year. Kapers and Swiss agreed on a new GAV that increased the starting fee by 18 percent from 3,400 to 4,000 francs. However, members rejected the deal by a clear majority of 66 percent at the end of February.

An 18 percent increase in the starting wage sounds like a lot, but HK points out: “You can barely get by on 4,000 francs in Switzerland. We all get a better paying job instantly – with less responsibility.”

“We want to be able to choose our days off”

It calls for a “significant increase in the starting wage of over 4,000 francs” as well as “significant leaps” for anyone who has worked for the Lufthansa subsidiary for years.

HK says many flight attendants aren’t just about money. “We want to be able to choose the days off ourselves.” Flight attendants today are told they are vacant on the 18th. “I want to be able to buy a concert ticket and make sure I can go.”

These demands are not new. “I don’t believe we’ll find a compromise that we’re happy with,” HK says. His conclusion: “Eventually it will probably result in the threat of a strike.” “No one wants that,” he says. “Not out of fear of the company, but out of respect for the passengers.”
