Large room for an extra holiday week

With a parliamentary initiative Hurni demanded an adjustment of the Swiss Code of Obligations (OR). Employees should be entitled to at least five weeks’ holiday and young people under 20 to at least six weeks. Today, the Works Council prescribes a minimum of four or five paid vacation weeks.

Hurni justified his claim with the constant availability and health of the employees, such as burnouts. One should especially remember those who kept Switzerland going during the pandemic. It mainly concerns people with low wages and little vacation time, says Tamara Funiciello (SP/BE).

The majority of the Legal Committee (RK-N) was against the initiative. She recalled the No to the 2012 citizens’ initiative for six weeks’ holiday. It has not been proven that more weeks of holiday means less stress because the total workload does not decrease as a result.

Spokesman Alexandre Bertoud (FDP/VD) insisted on freedom of contract. Companies must be able to offer employees more vacation days than allowed by law. “Today we have a lot of programs on the left and right of work,” says Philipp Matthias Bregy (center/US). That also means stress. (SDA)
