Against oblivion and for complete enlightenment: The Greeks are once again on strike and take to the streets because of the serious train accident. They demand that there should be no “business as usual”.
Normally people go on strike for higher wages or better working conditions, in Greece there are currently protests against the sloppiness in the state. Another 24-hour nationwide strike on Thursday.
The reason is the serious train accident more than two weeks ago, in which 57 people died. For the first time, all domestic and international flights are affected by the strikes, because air traffic controllers and civil aviation employees, among others, are on strike.
The ongoing investigation into the head-on collision between a passenger train and a freight train revealed huge grievances on the track. The station master, who sent the passenger train onto the wrong platforms, was demonstrably totally overwhelmed at his post.
In addition, modern technical security systems have not worked or only partially worked for years. All governments over the last 20 years have failed completely when it comes to rail, the opinion is unanimous.
In addition to air traffic, public transport and ferry connections are also on strike. The civil service is on strike, as are workers in the health sector.
There should be only a few exceptions – such as an emergency service in the hospitals or humanitarian flights. In public transport, buses and trains only run at noon to take people to demonstrations in the country’s major cities. (sda/awp/dpa)
