Tempo 100 is off the table

In the event of a power failure, the maximum speed on Swiss motorways will not be limited to 100 km/h, says Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin.

Even if you can get away with it this winter, the Federal Council has planned various measures should electricity become scarce in the coming years. In November, Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin (63, SVP) presented the plan on how to act in an emergency.

Cantons, associations and parties had time to comment on the proposals. Based on the feedback, the Bundesrat re-examined the books for certain measures.

For example, in an emergency he wants to refrain from prescribing 100 km/h on the Autobahn. The direct effect on electricity consumption would have been minimal. A speed limit could only be applied if the fuel is also missing.

Electric cars are also allowed to continue driving around. For “environmental reasons”, the Bundesrat has waived restrictions and the savings potential is still too low.

A uniform maximum temperature of 20 degrees would apply to heating living and office spaces.

The energy saving scenario currently looks like this:

1

cuts are appealing

It starts innocently. The federal government calls on all electricity consumers to save money. “At the same time, the Bundesrat can already issue the first usage restrictions and prohibitions,” says a press release.

2

limits

In a second step, the Bundesrat can ban various devices that are not absolutely necessary. First, less hot washing is needed and neon signs remain banned from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. In a second step, the opening hours of wellness facilities can be shortened and neon signs banned altogether. In a third step, the opening hours of shops would be shortened and snow cannons would be banned for the ski areas.

3

quotas

In a next step, the Bundesrat can set quotas for electricity consumption. This would affect sports and cultural events with high power consumption, as well as snow sports facilities. The wellness facilities will then remain completely closed.

4

Switch off

As a last resort, the Bundesrat can shut down the network for several hours. (brother/SDA)
