“Not at the expense of those seeking protection”: Refugee Aid rejects tightening of the asylum system

Minister of Justice Beat Jans at the media conference during his visit to the federal asylum center in Chiasso TI.

Access to an asylum procedure and to appropriate housing must be granted to all asylum seekers at all times – regardless of the chance of success of the application, the SFH writes. Federal asylum structures must not be relieved at the expense of those seeking protection. It should not be the case that those seeking protection are rejected and left homeless.

Jans stipulates that asylum seekers from countries of origin with little prospect of asylum being granted in the future will have to motivate their application in writing in advance. However, the applicants lacked knowledge of the Swiss legal system. The SFH therefore rejects this. According to the aid organization, clarifying and verifying the reasons for asylum is a core function of the asylum procedure. This is the only way to correctly clarify the need for protection.

The SFH also criticizes the 24-hour procedure. This should be introduced throughout Switzerland by the end of April. If the asylum process, which is already tightly planned, is accelerated even further, there is a risk that asylum applications and reasons for flight will not be thoroughly clarified – and that wrong decisions will be made. The procedure tested so far at the Federal Asylum Center in Zurich should be subjected to a quantitative and qualitative evaluation before being introduced throughout Switzerland.

Jans announced the reforms in the asylum sector to the media on Tuesday after a visit to the federal asylum center in Chiasso TI. He wants to defuse the tense situation in the asylum centers with various measures. To prevent abuse of the asylum structures, asylum applications may in future only be submitted during the week. Criminal asylum seekers must also be dealt with more severely.
