Whether in the toilet, the bathtub or the washing machine: almost all of us have dropped our hair in water at some point. After hunting in panic, that famous trick comes into play. Since the mobile phone absorbs moisture very well, it should be dried again on a bed of rice.

However, for high-tech electronics manufacturers such as Apple, this feature is worrying. The US computer company recently issued a strong warning in a support document against placing wet iPhones in rice. This could increase the potential damage, the Big Tech company writes.

Rice may leave residue on iPhone

In an official support document, Apple writes: “Do not put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Otherwise, small rice particles can damage your iPhone.” Apple does not explain to what extent this could damage the device. However, Apple trade magazine Macworld clearly writes that when rice absorbs moisture, it swells and becomes sticky, and residues may remain on the device.

Apple also warns against other common heat sources like heaters or hair dryers. You should also avoid inserting a cotton swab into the opening as it may damage electronics.

So what should you do if your iPhone gets wet?

Apple writes in its message that if you drop your iPhone in water, you should gently tap it against your palm with the open side facing down. The purpose of this is to remove excess moisture.

The next step is to leave the mobile phone in a dry, well-ventilated area for at least 30 minutes. It may take up to 24 hours for it to dry completely again and for the message about water in the Lightning port to disappear from the screen.

Experts at Macworld also write that air-drying is measurably better than ground rice. As a result, a fast response is crucial to preserve the life of the device.
