The day before yesterday was cheap. Romania’s Renault subsidiary Dacia has changed its strategy with a new logo and electric drives. Our motto now is sensible technology at a reasonable price. Especially in Switzerland, Dacia customers invest the budget they saved in the base price into options; everything at once, most of the time this is the order. Dacia now has an electric car in its product range with its affordable electric car Spring.
The reward for the effort: a nine percent increase in sales and a 3.2 percent market share last year. Dacia is now taking things to the next level at the Geneva International Motor Show GIMS. Much of the attention is likely to focus on Dacia, as parent company Renault is the only European manufacturer attending the show.
Dacia is launching two new products in Geneva: The compact SUV Duster ranked first among SUVs sold to private customers (i.e. excluding fleet customers) in the last five years; More than 2.2 million products have already rolled off the assembly line. The new generation of the five-seater will be launched in June and will celebrate its general premiere in Geneva following its introduction in December.
Of course, the design remains intact; The dimensions are also essentially unchanged. However, more space is created in the interior thanks to thinner panels and the new lower seating position. The trunk is also larger at 472 liters.
The Duster is now also hybridised: The Hybrid 140 version comes with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 94 hp (69 kW), an additional 47 hp (35 kW) electric motor and a 48 V starter generator – providing a single System output of 140 HP. The mild hybrid version has a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with 130 hp (96 kW); There is also a 48-volt starter generator that charges a 0.9 kWh battery through regeneration during braking. Of course, there is also a 4×4 option. Prices for the third Duster generation have not yet been determined, but the Duster is likely to remain in the list of the cheapest fourteen-wheel drive vehicles in Switzerland.
The second innovation in Dacia: The affordable Stromer Spring is getting a facelift. Dacia has sold around 140,000 units since 2021; In the summer it will now have a new, more confident look and more digital features in the cockpit; for example digital displays. There’s also a new ten-inch touchscreen for infotainment and polished materials. Practical: Frunk, for example a small compartment under the front bonnet for the charging cable.
Propulsion continues with a 65 hp (48 kW) electric motor at the front axle and a battery capacity of 26.8 kilowatt hours (kWh); This means a range of 220 kilometers with a consumption of 14.6 kWh/100 km. With the Spring already sold, Dacia found that its customers traveled an average of 37 kilometers at an average speed of 37 km/h and mostly charged at home. Expensive fast charging technology with 30 kW charging power is therefore only available as an option; However, the charging capacity of the AC charger has been doubled to 7.4 kW.
There’s no price yet for the upgraded Spring either, but it’s likely to stay below Dacia’s magic 25,000 franc mark: rival Citroën will launch its all-electric ë-C3 in the spring and go on sale at a price below that threshold.
