Given the tense financial situation of the federal government, tax relief for shipping companies seems no longer able to gain a majority. The responsible committee of the Council of States rejects the introduction of a so-called tonnage tax.
The Committee on Economic Affairs and Taxes of the Council of States took this decision with 7 votes in favor, 4 against and 2 abstentions, the parliamentary services announced on Tuesday. In concrete terms, the majority requested the plenary meeting of the next spring meeting not to act on the proposal.
With the introduction of the tonnage tax, companies active in shipping could choose to no longer pay profit tax for individual ships, but instead pay flat rates for the carrying capacity. This would make the average tax burden for companies considerably lighter than it is now.
The National Council and the Financial Commission of the Council of States had spoken out in favor of the tonnage tax before the federal elections. According to proponents, this should create a level playing field with foreign countries that already apply such a tax. (SDA)
