“The fact that they want to amend the seven-year Union Budget Law is an excellent opportunity for Hungary to get back the rest of the withheld funds,” Orbán said in an interview with Hungarian state television and radio in Brussels on Friday. “We don’t need to get half, not a quarter, but everything,” Orbán said. “We are entitled to this money.”

Due to a veto by Hungary, the other heads of state and government could not approve a financial support package of 50 billion euros for Ukraine as planned on Friday evening.

Currently, around €21 billion in EU funds for Hungary are frozen. The European Commission released ten billion euros of the blocked amount a day before the EU summit, on the grounds that Hungary had implemented the necessary judicial reforms. MEPs had criticized the decision as unjustified and accused the authority, led by Ursula von der Leyen, of allowing itself to be blackmailed.

Orban also pointed out on Friday that a decision on Ukraine’s accession to the EU is still far away. Hungary still has “75 options to stop this process.” Like all national parliaments, Hungary’s would also have to ratify Ukraine’s accession to the EU. “If we do not want Ukraine to become a member of the European Union, the Hungarian parliament will vote against it,” Orbán said.
