US President Biden thanks the prisoner exchange: Switzerland mediated between Iran and the US

US President Joe Biden on Monday thanked Switzerland and the governments of other countries involved in the prisoner swap with Iran. Switzerland, Qatar, Oman and South Korea had worked “tirelessly” on the deal with the Americans, he said. “Five innocent Americans held captive in Iran are finally returning home” and “will soon be reunited with their loved ones after years of fear, uncertainty and suffering,” the US president said.

“Dialogue is always the best way”

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) has welcomed the prisoner exchange between the US and Iran. Switzerland was involved in the prisoner exchange through its good offices.

The FDFA would like to thank all countries involved for the trust they have placed in it, it said in a statement on Monday. Switzerland was able to transfer five American citizens released by Iran to American authorities in the Qatari capital Doha. According to the EDA, the US has released five Iranian nationals.

Thanks to its many years of experience, Switzerland has made an important contribution to the success of this humanitarian gesture. Switzerland has taken on this key role as part of its good offices and at the request of all parties involved.

Oman also mediated

The prisoner exchange had been prepared for months. According to the White House, Oman and Qatar in particular played an important role in the negotiations. In early August, Iran released the now released Americans and placed them under house arrest in a hotel in Tehran.

According to the EDA, Foreign Minister Cassis thanked the two countries for the trust they had placed in Switzerland. Dialogue is always the best way. In addition to the protective power mandate for the US in Iran, Switzerland has four other protective power mandates: for Russia in Georgia and for Georgia in Russia, for Iran in Egypt and for Iran in Canada.
