Among the vaccines that are becoming scarce is the quadruple vaccine for boosting the basic immunization of children between four and seven years old against diphtheria, whooping cough, polio and tetanus, as the Federal Ministry of Economy, Education and Research (EAER) announced on Thursday. There is also a shortage of vaccines against meningitis and chickenpox.
According to the WBF, the reasons for the shortage vary. The affected vaccines are in high demand worldwide and are not available in sufficient quantities. In Switzerland, there were changes in approvals and the associated dissolution of mandatory stocks, which aggravated the situation.
At the same time there are new registrations. These, according to the EAER, will stabilize supply in the long term once a new equilibrium has been reached. The new licensees and those with new products will gradually replenish the required stocks, provided supplies are guaranteed.
The release of mandatory stocks applies to all human vaccines subject to mandatory stocks, even if current supply bottlenecks affect only a portion of the vaccines. With this step, the supply of goods from the mandatory stocks can be quickly improved in case of short-term bottlenecks. The national economic offer assumes that the situation will ease in the spring of 2024.
The vaccination advice of the FPS Public Health and the Federal Commission for Vaccination Issues continue to apply, the EAER announced. The two federal agencies would adjust their recommendations if demand could no longer be met. This is currently not necessary. (SDA)
