With 310 votes to 0, the delegates in Küssnacht SZ on Saturday approved the application of the SVP leadership in support of the “Sustainability Initiative” developed by the SVP Zurich. Only a numerically limited Switzerland is sustainable, the National Council of Zurich, Thomas Matter (57), justified the name of the referendum.
The aim of the initiative is to prevent the “Switzerland of 10 million”, which the SVP has labeled as a danger. He does not want 10 million Switzerland, but a future for his children, party chairman Marco Chiesa (48) said in his speech to the deputies.
The initiative requires Switzerland to take action if its resident population exceeds 9.5 million. If Switzerland has more than 10 million inhabitants before 2050, it must cancel treaties that lead to population growth, such as the free movement of people with the EU.
Switzerland is as crowded as a bathtub with no one turning the water off, Matter said. Almost every problem Switzerland faces has to do with immigration. Many Swiss felt like strangers in their own country.
Sustainable population development is necessary to protect the environment and the efficiency of infrastructure, health and education facilities and social services, Matter said. “Beautiful Switzerland” did not deserve to become a “second Hong Kong”.
The deputies’ decision was preceded by a marathon of speeches criticizing immigration and especially Switzerland’s asylum policy. Party chairman Marco Chiesa fired the starting shot. “There are too many and the wrong people are coming,” said Ticino’s State Council.
Most asylum seekers are not poor refugees, but “asylum tourists who abuse our system” and can pay the smugglers thousands of francs, Chiesa said. He does not blame these people, but the other parties and Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59), who let the “failed system” go.
The consequences are high costs, a falling level at schools and a housing shortage, says Chiesa. Moreover, especially young men come with a “high violence potential”.
Chiesa not only addressed the company from the lectern, he also walked between the banquet benches. He does not want a $10 million Switzerland, but a future for his children. Schengen failed, he said.
It is not possible to control migration with the current laws, said Gregor Rutz, 50, National Councilor of Zurich. According to his estimation, mainly asylum seekers who are not persecuted, but want to share in the prosperity. They would know that once they were in Switzerland they could stay.
“We are sending the wrong signals,” says Bernese health, social and integration director Pierre Alain Schnegg (60). The cantons are on the offensive and forced to build collective housing in unsuitable places. The population now needs clear signals that the federal government has the situation under control.
The SVP’s campaign manager, National Councilor Marcel Dettling, 42, said the left wanted half the world to be permanently admitted to Switzerland. Under no circumstances should you prevail again in the federal elections on October 22, otherwise “good night Switzerland”.
