The crew of the German rescue ship Humanity 1 has brought on board nearly 200 migrants and refugees during several operations in the central Mediterranean. As the Berlin association SOS Humanity announced on Saturday, the ship encountered four boats in distress the night before and during the night. The sometimes very weak and injured people, including women and small children, were rescued from their boats. The Italian authorities helped coordinate. Two people were evacuated by the Coast Guard. Humanity had already had its first mission on Thursday.
Humanity 1 then proceeded to the assigned port of Ortona with a total of 197 survivors on board. This location on Italy’s central Adriatic coast is over 1,000 kilometers from the locations near the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. Humanity 1 was not allowed to enter there. Thousands of migrants had arrived in Lampedusa by boat in recent days. The island’s shelter is overcrowded. (SDA)
