Ever since entrepreneur Elon Musk (51) took over the social media news service Twitter, nothing has remained untranslated. Whatever the cost, the billionaire is reshaping the company and the platform.
Final example: Anyone who doesn’t use Twitter gets kicked off the platform. Elon Musk explained this himself.
Interesting detail: Musk tweeted that accounts with no action for “several years” will be cleaned. However, looking at Twitter’s inactive accounts policy, users must log in at least once every 30 days to keep their accounts active. This part of the policy is fairly new. As late as April 19, 2023, the same site said that Twitter users must log in every six months to keep their accounts active.
The policy states that currently inactive usernames will not be released. However, Musk states in the dialogue below the tweet above that the company will change this rule. “It’s important to release abandoned account names,” Musk writes.
Some users are asking Musk to reconsider this decision. For example, tweets from deceased users would be deleted. Musk says his accounts will be archived. However, it is currently unclear who and how will access such archived tweets.
The only thing that is clear is that some Twitter users are likely to see a significant drop in their follower count, as Musk himself predicted.
