The Swiss labor market is defying recession fears: companies are desperately looking for skilled workers. According to the Michael Page Swiss Job Index, the number of positions posted increased by 5 percent between March and April 2023. There is an increase of 3.2 percent compared to the previous year.

There is even positive news from the banking sector, which was affected by the CS merger: The number of positions advertised for investment bankers increased by 5.7 percent. This is despite the fact that the majority of these positions are not normally advertised. Despite this, the number of positions announced in the financial services sector decreased by 4.9 percent in this period.

“Employers are getting more selective”

Yannick Coulange, Managing Director of Page Group Switzerland, explains: “The overall Swiss personnel market is strong. “It’s still a candidate-driven market,” he says. In other words, anyone who is currently looking for a job has great power when it comes to wages and working conditions. “But employers are becoming more selective and making higher demands on candidates in the hiring process.”

The greatest demand for skilled workers is in the catering industry. This is followed by artisans and production specialists, reflecting the return of production to Switzerland, according to the study’s authors. Demand in the real estate, construction and informatics sectors also maintains its strength.

German-speaking Switzerland before Romandy

The number of positions posted in German-speaking Switzerland increased by 5.6 percent. It is weaker in French-speaking Switzerland, plus 0.7 percent. Central Switzerland took the lead, with an 11 percent increase in the number of positions posted. Two-thirds of vacancies in this region were in IT, engineering, technical specialists or sales.

The Michael Page Switzerland Job Index measures the number of vacancies advertised on company websites in Switzerland. Since January 2012, the jobs index provides an overview of the Swiss job market and shows the most important trends on a monthly basis.
