The US actress protested her innocence in a civil lawsuit filed against Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow (50) for a skiing accident. Paltrow said Friday before the court in Park City, Utah, that the crash in the Rocky Mountains in 2016 was caused not by her, but by Terry Sanderson, 75, who filed a lawsuit against her.
Retired optometrist Sanderson accuses Paltrow of bumping into him and seriously injuring him while skiing. Lawyer for the plaintiff, Lawrence Buhler, told Sanderson at the start of the trial Tuesday that he had driven “dangerously” and “recklessly”, causing Sanderson “fracture of all four ribs and permanent brain damage” and leaving him unconscious.
He estimated that the damage done in this way was about three million francs. Paltrow’s attorney, Steven Owens, said Sanderson was “obsessed” with the case and made “false allegations”.
Paltrow filed a counterclaim, demanding a nominal $1 and reimbursement of his attorney’s fees from Sanderson. On Friday, he was given the opportunity to present his version of events to the court. “Mr Sanderson absolutely hit me on this ski slope and that’s the truth,” the 50-year-old said in cross-examination.
He even considered sexual assault at first when Sanderson slipped from behind his skis. “I was skiing, and then two skis got between my skis and spread my legs, and then a body pressed against mine and there was a strange grunting sound,” Paltrow said. “I thought: Is this some kind of joke? Is someone doing something perverted?”
The accident occurred while Paltrow was on vacation with her current husband, Brad Falchuk, and her two children from her marriage to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. It is said that Falchuk and his children Elma and Musa will also testify during this process. Sanderson’s questioning is also awaited.
Regarding the alleged hit-and-run claim by Sanderson’s lawyer, Paltrow said her ski instructor told her her daughter could ski because the downhill was waiting for her. The Oscar-winning ski instructor “stayed and filled out the report and made sure that Mr. Sanderson was fine.”
Paltrow also had an explanation for not questioning Sanderson’s health later on: “I think you should keep in mind that when you’re the victim of an accident, you don’t have to psychologically think about the person who caused the accident.” (AFP)
