Swiss cheese increases market share for the first time since 2007

Overall, domestic cheese has lost 12 percent of market share since the market was liberalized in 2007, as Swiss dairy producers (SMP) announced Wednesday. Cheese consumption increased by 10 percent during this period.

Last year, 204 thousand tons of cheese from Switzerland and abroad were consumed in Switzerland. This is pretty much the same as last year. Cheese consumption per capita decreased by 300 grams due to population growth. On average, a Swiss resident consumed 22.9 kilos of cheese.

Consumer habits have changed slowly but steadily over the past 15 years. Meanwhile, cream cheese and quark are increasingly in demand. Each person in Switzerland consumed an average of 8.5 kilos this past year, in the form of 3.3 kilos of mozzarella alone.

Per capita semi-hard cheese consumption has increased from 5.72 to 6.42 kilograms in the last 15 years. The association writes that in addition to Raclette Suisse, Raclette du Valais, Appenzeller, Vacherin Fribourgeois, Tilsiter and Tête de Moine, many regional semi-hard cheeses are also on sale.

Consumption of Le Gruyère, Swiss Swiss and Alpine cheese in hard cheese increased compared to the previous year, largely offsetting the decreased amounts in other hard cheeses. Per capita consumption is currently 3.79 kilograms.

Specialties made from goat, sheep and buffalo milk cheeses have become increasingly popular with consumers over the past 15 years. Their per capita consumption increased from 130 grams to 200 grams.

Consumption figures were calculated by Agristat using data from TSM Treuhand GmbH, the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security and Swiss dairy producers. The figures are part of the “Swiss Milk Statistics 2022”, which will be published in late summer 2023.
