Eberle Würzig, from the village cheese dairy in Muolen SG, may not be as famous as Gruyère or Emmentaler. However, when it comes to taste, it leaves the most prominent cheeses behind: At the “World Cheese Awards” organized by the Fine Foods Association in Trondheim, Norway this year, St. Cow’s milk cheese from the north of St. Gallen was deemed worthy of the award. Voted the best in Switzerland.

A total of 4,502 cheeses from 43 countries were examined. Only 100 of them managed to enter the “Super Gold” category. In addition to Eberle Würzig, 12 other cheeses from Switzerland managed to be among this elite cheese:

  • Affineur Walo Jura mountain cheese from Walo von Mühlenen from Düdingen FR
  • Slow Food by Gourmino from Gotthelf Emmentaler AOP Langnau BE
  • Kaltbach Appenzeller from Emmi Group in Lucerne
  • Kaltbach Engadiner Bergkäse, also Emmi Group
  • Lucerne pearl from Käserei Seetal in Hämikon LU
  • Müller-Thurgau Spicy from the Müller-Thurgau cheese dairy in Amriswil TG
  • Müller-Thurgau Rezent, also Müller-Thurgau cheese dairy
  • Raclette du Valais AOP Valdor-Bagnes 4-Liddes
  • Emmentaler AOP Premier cru Kriechenwill from Cremo in Villars-sur-Glâne FR
  • LeSuperbe Jura Montagne from Lustenberger + Dürst from Hünenberg ZG
  • Semi-hard cheese Simmental from the Elsa Group in Estavayer-le-Lac FR
  • Aletsch Grand Cru from Walker mountain cheese dairy in Bitsch VS

The best cheese comes from Norway

In addition to 13 “Super Gold” awards, Swiss cheese also won 34 gold, 62 silver and 55 bronze awards.

But the world’s best cheese doesn’t come from Switzerland. Home advantage Norway? The winner was handmade blue cheese called “Nidelven Blå” from Gangstad Gårdsysteri in Inderøy, just north of Trondheim.
