Let’s say you’re planning a trip to the Bernese Oberland. A direct bus runs from Thun train station to Interlaken, comfortably across Lake Thun. The price of the ticket without a half-ticket card is 14 francs. Just under 24 francs in 1st class. For an additional fee of 10 francs: there will be nothing on the bus route.
On buses and trams, all passengers travel in wooden class. However, SBB offers 1st class tickets for many connections. Media spokesperson Reto Schärli explains that this is due to collective bargaining associations. For example, the route network in the cantons of Bern and Solothurn belongs to the Libero network.

When purchasing within the region, the SBB app does not recognize that you have made a bus or train reservation. So is there a first class or not? Tickets are purchased for regions, not for specific means of transportation.
There are no problems on National Direct Transport (NDV) routes. NDV includes the national tariff union without regions, the intercommunal and cantonal route network. For example, if you go from Chur to Bellinzona by bus, you can only buy a 2nd class ticket.
At the end of March, it was reported that SBB had detected a problem in “Landbote” and was trying to fix it. At the time, an SBB spokesperson said that it would no longer be possible to buy 1st class tickets for buses and trams in the future.
Now Allianz Swiss Pass is coming back. No such change is currently planned. The public transport sector is working on a new tariff system to align the unions’ tariff environment with national direct transport. But Alliance Swiss Pass spokeswoman Susanna Wittwer Klingler says first-class bus tickets are no problem. “We address the different needs of our customers. We have been informed that this situation is not serious.”
The only option left for customers is to help themselves. Anyone who mistakenly buys a first-class bus or tram ticket can defend themselves. Rosmarie Naef from the Watchdog Advice Center recommends demanding the money back. «SBB offers a product they cannot deliver. Therefore, the overpaid price must be refunded,” he said.
Alliance Swiss Pass also recommends that you contact the shipping company’s customer service. If premium usage is not available in an area, the money will generally be refunded.
