We are the Swiss recycling kings. In no other country is 80 percent of waste paper recycled. Once collected by communities, paper can be resold and then made into new paper or cardboard.
But the price of old notebooks, the last dental bill or her daughter’s article is by no means fixed. At the end of last year, the price of recycled paper was at an all-time high. A ton of paper costs 160 francs. Reason: Fear of the Ukrainian war and the consequent energy bottleneck and lack of raw materials. “The freight areas, logistics and energy situation have deteriorated significantly over the past year,” Alain Probst (57), board member of the Recycling, Paper and Cardboard Association, tells Blick. Due to the fear of not being able to produce more in the winter, purchasing paper in advance reduced the supply.
Probst also sits on the board of Perlen Papier in the canton of Lucerne, the last graphic paper mill in Switzerland, and is responsible for the supply of raw materials there.
Now that winter is over, the energy crisis is largely unrealized and the result of hoarding is taking effect. “With the decline in demand in Europe, manufacturers are struggling to sustain their capacity utilization,” says Probst. Within a few months, the price of waste paper fell again. After overproduction comes the hole. Communities no longer have anything for a ton of paper. At the low point, municipalities actually had to pay for waste collection due to taxes.
Nor does Probst expect the situation to improve in the coming months: “It is quite possible that waste paper will become scarce again in a few months.” In fact, the price rose again in June, a ton of waste paper is now 15 francs.
The volatility of the paper market is nothing new. During the corona epidemic, waste paper suddenly became much more expensive. In the lockdown, thriving online commerce has led to a veritable parcel flood. The enormous demand for cardboard suddenly made waste paper scarce, which drove up the price.
Even newsprint buyers felt the paper shortage. “Migros-Magazin”, the second highest circulation magazine in Switzerland after “Coop Zeitung”, announced at that time that it would narrow its number of issues for a few weeks.
