Smokers are now doing the same thing with koalas: Their habitats are getting smaller and smaller. Thanks to powerful advertising machines, the fag has long represented composure and freedom. Today it represents perseverance and the will to suffer. At SBB train stations, nicotine addicts have to walk far from smoking areas and are collected in small glass boxes at many airports. The only way to truly relax is to enjoy cigarettes outside, for example, on the beach.

But even in these last shelters, more and more smokers quit. Many well-known tourist areas impose a smoking ban on their beaches. The logic is the same everywhere: avoiding tons of toxic cigarette butts that harm the environment and bathroom atmosphere. And the protection of non-smokers who should not passively smoke. Blick provides an overview.

Italy: Anyone who smokes for pregnant women pays twice

The popular beach in Bibione is non-smoking. The tourist area was a first in Italy and tested the first smoke-free beach areas ten years ago. Today, smokers are allowed to light cigarettes in small areas separated by ropes on the nine-kilometer-long beach. Anyone violating the ban risks being fined 50 euros.

Prices for buses on the Italian coast range from 27.50 euros to 275 euros – if you are accompanied by a pregnant woman or a minor, you do not smoke. Then you pay double, ie between 55 and 550 euros. Smoking has also been banned on Apulia’s 800km beach since this summer. The same applies to beaches in Venice, Lazio, Sicily or Sardinia. There are currently no regulations for e-cigarettes in Italian law. If you want to vape on the beach, it is better to ask the beach operator.

Spain: Fines of up to 1800 euros for stubs

Smoking bans are also growing on Spain’s beaches, like parasols rising from the ground. After the first beach in Spain was declared non-smoking in 2006, the smoking ban now applies to around 550 beaches. Barcelona expanded the ban last summer to include all beaches. Violations will result in a 30 Euro fine.

There are other bans on beaches, for example in Valencia, Galicia, Gibraltar, Andalusia, the Canary Islands and the three Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The fine for smoking on the beaches of Mogán in Gran Canaria is 400 euros. Anyone who then throws the butt into the sea pays up to 1800 euros. In many places, vaping e-cigarettes is treated the same as traditional smoking.

This applies to France, Greece and Portugal.

Nice introduced a smoking ban in 2012. Meanwhile, Monaco, Marseille and many other Mediterranean cities have done the same on sunbathing beaches. A no-smoking flag is being hoisted on more and more beaches on the Atlantic coast. Corsica is based on non-smoking areas. In France, the ban generally applies to e-cigarettes as well.

The tourist areas of Greece are even more in line with smokers. However, as of 2020, bans on beaches have increased here as well. In Portugal, a new smoking law comes into force in October: Accordingly, those who bathe on the beach must pay attention to the prohibition signs. After that, municipalities or beach operators can enforce smoking bans and also create smoking areas.
