The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a five-seat supercar

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a five-seat supercar

We knew the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was coming, but the specs still shocked us. The electric crossover has an incredible 650 hp, accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and only stops at 260 km/h.

Hyundai and Kia are doing well. They produce some of the best electric cars in the world. The Kia EV6 GT is a real powerhouse at 585 horsepower, but this Hyundai Ioniq 5 N tops that with two fingers up its nose.

Hyundai Ioniq 5N at Goodwood

The four-wheel crossover storms the hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week with an output of 650 hp. Unbelievable! This makes it more powerful than the world’s fastest production car, the McLaren F1.

In 3.4 seconds to 100 km/h

At just over 2000 kilos, it is a lot heavier, but with a sprint time from a standing start to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds it is still almost as fast. Hyundai has set the speed limiter to 260 km/h quite easily.

Incidentally, the Ioniq 5 N does not always have 650 hp. This power stat only applies in N Grin Boost mode, which can only be active for 10 seconds. Normally, the extreme Hyundai is “only” 609 hp.

Bigger battery than Ioniq 5

The normal Ioniq 5 is available with a 58 or 77.4 kWh battery. For the N version, Hyundai picked an 84kWh model that would be enough for… an unknown range. Because the Korean manufacturer does not want to say anything about this for the time being.

For anyone who wants a tip: The rear-wheel drive Ioniq 5 with a 77.4 kWh battery has a maximum range of 507 kilometers. The version with 58 kWh is the least present, as it is out of breath at 384 kilometers according to the WLTP.

With a real drift mode

Basically, the Ioniq 5 is not particularly sporty, so Hyundai had to make all sorts of interventions. The chassis and front and rear subframes are reinforced with additional welds and glue. In addition, the electric motors and the battery are even better secured.

Of interest is the N Drift Optimizer, a drift mode, and the Torque Kick Drift, which would simulate the effect of suddenly pedaling and releasing the clutch. In addition, the Ioniq 5 N has an electronic lock on the rear axle.

Improved cooling of electric motors

Because performance is key in this hot Hyundai, the manufacturer has improved the cooling of both the electric motors and the battery. There is even the possibility of preheating the latter for use on the race track or for the fastest possible sprints.

Apparently Hyundai genuinely believes people will use their Ioniq 5 N on the race track, because the N-Race system allows them to adjust the energy consumption to finish a race or set some fast lap times.

Simulates an eight-speed automatic transmission

The Ioniq 5 N has larger physical brakes, but in practice you should use them less, as the regeneration function can slow down the heavy crossover by 0.6G when you let go of the power pedal.

In any case, Hyundai does not seem to have come about overnight. The Ioniq 5 N’s N E-Shift system simulates an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic and N Active Sound+ makes the EV sound like a combustion engine sports car.

Wider and lower than an Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has 5 centimeters less ground clearance and is 5 centimeters wider than a normal Ioniq 5. It stands on imposing 21-inch alloy wheels. As a driver, you naturally sit on beautiful sports seats and look at a sporty black dashboard.
