Those who earn more have to pay more; the majority wants the healthcare revolution

A majority of Swiss people believe that health insurance premiums should depend on income. This is evident from a representative survey by the Sotomo research institute among 6,066 voters in German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland.

According to survey results published on Saturday by “Blick”, 57 percent of respondents would like the current premium to be abolished.

According to the research, it is not only left-green voters who believe that those who earn a lot should pay higher health insurance premiums. 55 percent of centrist voters also say yes or rather yes to this idea. Among the GLP electorate this is 54 percent.

51 percent of SVP sympathizers also said yes or rather yes to the question of whether health insurance premiums should be income-related.

Discounts on health insurance premiums were also the first mentioned by survey participants when it came to possible measures to ease the burden on families. 66 percent of respondents were in favor of premium reductions. Secondly are measures to create affordable housing.

The opinion of those surveyed is also clear about who has a harder time making ends meet in Switzerland these days: retirees or families. According to 56 percent, it is ‘more families’ or ‘certainly families’.

Political scientist Sarah Bütikofer from Sotomo is quoted by “Blick” as saying that healthcare costs are in reality a building site for which politicians must find “real and sustainable solutions”. (sda)
